Independent Candidates
An
Independent political candidate is a candidate that is not associated with the
traditional political parties or factions, and consequently, is not obliged to
follow a party whip.
Independent candidates can more fully represent the opinions of voters at
a local, national and European level, as they are free from pressure to toe
party lines. They are a credible
and viable alternative to party politicians and represent the future of the
democratic process.
The
public can no longer differentiate between the main parties, resulting in a
fall of over 50 per cent in UK political party membership in the last two
decades. The need for Independent
candidates in public office is evident.
