Anti-sleaze team targets discredited MPs
Martin Bell, former independent MP and war reporter has teamed up with former Beirut hostage Terry Waite to join the campaign to promote independent political candidates.
They want to see a return to “honest politics” by creating a network of independent candidates to target the seats of MPs caught up in this summer’s expenses scandal. Among them is the shadow leader of the Commons Alan Duncan, who was recorded on secret video saying MPs had to live on rations.
Not-for-profit association Independent Network (IN) is also campaigning to raise the profile of independent candidates and promoting them as an alternative to political parties. IN is unique in its aim to create a strong national identity for those independents standing in an election; and to encourage voters to identify themselves as independents. This sense of cohesion will help to address the inequality faced by independents standing against one of the three established political parties.
