Power 2010: The New Campaign for Democratic Change
POWER 2010 is a
new e-democracy campaign, funded by the Joseph Roundtree Reform Trust. They aim
to give people across the country a real say in what reforms they think are
needed to make democracy fairer and stronger.
Those who are interested in democratic reform and non-party
politics may be interested in Power 2010.
As such, it offers a vehicle to independents who wish to communicate democracy.
Power 2010 gets the public to propose their ideas
on democratic reform online. Ideas can be submitted quickly and easily by
completing an electronic form on www.power2010.org.uk.
So far over 3000 people have submitted their ideas to the site since
mid-September, with a wide range of topics from freedom
of speech to open
primaries.
The top 5 ideas submitted to the campaign will become the
POWER 2010 Pledge; the focus of a national campaign to change politics from the
grassroots. Power 2010 plans to sign
up all Parliamentary Prospective Candidates (PPCs) to the pledge.
Interestingly there are numerous comments from the public
encouraging ‘independent thinking’. One popular idea is to abolish
party whips to enable MPs to have a free vote. Another idea is for impartial
Councillors, our local Councils shouldn’t be controlled by political
parties.
If you do wish to submit an idea you need to be quick –
the closing date for submissions is midnight on the 30th November. We
encourage supporters of the IN to propose ideas that may help independent
candidates.
We wish Power 2010
the best of luck in improving democracy and hope that this campaign may bring
about a new form of politics which will be beneficial to Independent candidates.
