A bigger chance for Independents
RESEARCH has shown the public are looking for an
alternative to mainstream political parties.
The Guardian’s most recent ICM poll showed just 85% of votes cast last
month were for the Conservatives, Labour or the Liberal Democrats.
Instead an increasing number of people are choosing marginal parties or
independent political candidates, with party membership falling by 50% in the
last 20 years.
But unlike marginal parties, independent political candidates represent an
alternative to party politics, giving the public the chance to use their votes
positively. The Independent Network aims to promote the value of politicians who
are free from the pressure of a party whip and in the unique position of being
able to listen to their constituents. It
seeks to address the inequality faced by independents standing against party
candidates, who have the support and resources of national parties.
Instead of toeing the party line independent politicians can campaign for
the needs of their constituents and actively take part in parliamentary debate.
